Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government-sponsored program in India aimed at developing students' personalities and character through voluntary community service. Introduced in 1969 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and based on the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, the NSS motto is "NOT ME, BUT YOU."

An NSS volunteer places the 'community' before 'self', and its purpose is "Education through Service."

NSS aims to help students develop qualities and competencies, understand the community, and identify community needs and problems. It encourages a sense of social and civic responsibility, knowledge application for problem-solving, and skills in mobilizing community participation. Additionally, NSS fosters leadership qualities, democratic values, and the ability to respond to emergencies and natural disasters.

Our Motto

"NOT ME BUT YOU"

Objectives of NSS

NSS aims at developing the following qualities and competencies among volunteers:

  1. Understand the community in which they work and their relation to it
  2. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve themselves in problem-solving exercises
  3. Develop a sense of social and civic responsibility
  4. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  5. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic values
  6. Develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
  7. Practice national integration and social harmony

NSS attempts to establish meaningful linkages between "Campus and Community", "College and Village", and "Knowledge and Action".

Benefits of Being an NSS Volunteer

An NSS volunteer participating in the community service program would typically be a college or senior secondary student. Active participation offers these student volunteers the opportunity to become:

✦ An accomplished social leader
✦ An efficient administrator
✦ A person who understands human nature

History of NSS

The NSS was launched in 1969, during the Gandhi Centenary Year, with the aim of enriching the youth with a sense of social service and responsibility. Over the years, the program has evolved to encompass a wide range of activities, including health camps, environmental conservation, and education drives.

Impact of NSS

NSS has made significant contributions to society by mobilizing youth for various social causes. Through countless projects, NSS volunteers have positively impacted communities, improved local environments, and supported education for underprivileged children.
